"The impact of volunteering at Camp Get-A-Way is amazing—it hits your heart strings. It connects them with other parents who may be experiencing similar challenges with their own children. And it's incredible to see children get a chance to make new friends and build relationships that last well beyond camp."

Whether you have a passion for the traditional art of tie-dying shirts or you’re an expert fish whisperer, there’s a place for you to get involved at Camp Get-A-Way as a volunteer.

If you’re a serious camper or simply curious but excited about helping kids and encouraging families, we need your help!

You could be the camp volunteer that changes a child’s life, becoming a memory they hold onto for years to come.

Volunteer at a mental health camp

We know that raising a child with mental, emotional, and behavioral health challenges can feel overwhelming. At Camp Get-A-Way, we regularly see discouraged families leave feeling refreshed, connected, and equipped after spending time with other families facing similar challenges. Volunteer with us and see just what we mean.

A summer camp is only as good as its staff, and it’s important for volunteers to align with the vision and values of Camp Get-A-Way to ensure that all children feel welcomed.

Every volunteer at Camp Get-A-Way will be well-equipped to support the many families who attend, and that starts with specific training to ensure that we can guarantee a summer camp for mental health support.

Volunteering at Camp

What kinds of jobs do camp volunteers do?

We always need people to improve the experience for our families by helping to run activities, sit with families during meals, or provide an extra set of hands for a family with multiple children. Volunteers assist with running programs, for example helping in arts and crafts, being an extra person on the pool deck or in the pool, helping with tie dye, etc.

What are the expectations for a volunteer?

Volunteers will need to complete a background check and attend a virtual orientation and training prior to attending camp. As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to choose your time commitment.  You can help with a few hours, a day, a whole session, or multiple sessions. Volunteers assist with running programs, for example helping in arts and crafts, being an extra person on the pool deck or in the pool, helping with tie dye, etc.

What is the time commitment for volunteering?

During camp sessions volunteer opportunities are very flexible.  You can volunteer for a few hours, a day, a whole session, or multiple sessions.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

There are no set age requirements for volunteers. We decide if a person can volunteer based on maturity rather than age. Minors can volunteer, but will be paired with an adult volunteer or staff member.

Why do you do a background check?

We want to do everything we can to make camp a great experience for all and assure campers are as safe as possible.

Do I need to attend a training or orientation before volunteering?

Yes. Because we want to be sure all our volunteers understand our approach and are prepared to handle a variety of situations, everyone is required to complete a virtual orientation and training session. During this training, we will explain how camp is run and provide basic training in our procedures and managing a crisis.

What are the medical requirements of working at camp?

The only requirement is that camp volunteers be medically able to participate in camp activities.

Can a parent volunteer at the camp they have a child attending?

No. Parents come as part of a camping family, but a parent can assist with activities, if needed and if they desire to.

I have volunteered before; do I need to come to volunteer training this year?

Yes.  We are continually enhancing and  updating our training, so it’s important to attend training each year you volunteer.

When will I know what my volunteer schedule is?

Volunteer schedules will be available when you check in at camp.

How do I make changes to my available dates?

No way to do so at the moment. We will try to add this capability.

I need proof of volunteer hours for school. When is the best time to get that, and from whom?

The Board President can provide a letter after your volunteering is complete.

If I volunteer for a program, do I have to stay for the entire time?

Yes, we do ask that you remain for the entire time so that we know we have an adequate number of volunteers.

Will I receive training to prepare me for my role?

Absolutely! All volunteers attend a virtual orientation and training session. During this training, we’ll explain the details of how camp is run and provide basic training in our procedures and managing a crisis.
