Ken Tangel

President; Training / Education

Although he grew up on Long Island, Ken Tangel now enjoys the beautiful woods and fields of upstate New York surrounding his Geneseo home. Ken and his wife, Laura, enjoy all the joyful noise and activity that comes with raising their seven children.

Fifteen years ago, Ken was asked to help with Camp Get-A-Way; and ever since, he’s been serving in a variety of capacities—running respite for children, serving as a one-on-one support person, and assisting with crisis response. He has served on the Camp Get-A-Way Board of Directors since November 2019 and became President in 2021. Ken loves seeing families that struggle, have positive interactions with each other and other families. There’s nothing like seeing a huge smile on the face of a kid after hitting the target with an arrow!

James Thibert

Vice President

James Thibert

Vice President

After serving in the Army for 25 years, James and his wife settled down in Seneca Castle, New York, where they’re managing a food pantry that serves families and agencies of Upstate New York. Rumor has it that James was also a pretty good hockey player back in the day.

As the board’s vice president, James works closely with Camp Get-A-Way’s president while also keeping the organization aligned with its mission, vision, and fiscal goals. Originally, he was invited to visit Camp Get-A-Way and see what it was all about—and from that first day he was hooked. He describes camp as life-changing—he loves meeting incredible families and watching the change that can take place over the span of just a few days. Families can walk away with practical skills, positive memories, and a new sense of purpose that will last far beyond camp.

Donations

Hailing from Lyndonville, New York, Regina Brewer began serving on the Camp Get-A-Way Board of Directors three years ago after experiencing Camp Get-A-Way with her grandson. As a single parent raising her grandson, Camp Get-A-Way was not only educational, but it also provided Regina and Andrew with a wonderful new community of friends.

Regina loves making a difference in others’ lives and working with the different families who attend Camp Get-A-Way.

Secretary

Originally from the Bronx, but now settled in Rochester, New York, John D’Armiento has served on the Camp Get-A-Way Board of Directors for over five years. He and his wife, Stacy, love spending time with their five children and their Camp Get-A-Way family.

After attending Camp Get-A-Way as a family and having a great experience, John wanted to help other families have the same experience. Camp Get-A-Way allows families and children to come together as one and be themselves without being judged.

Karen DeRouen

Operations

Residing in Rochester, New York, Karen J. DeRouen has served on the Camp Get-A-Way Board of Directors for over five years. Karen’s first Camp Get-A-Way experience opened her eyes to the need for the camp and showed her how much it meant to families to be in the camp environment.

As a kid, Karen’s parents always took her and her little sister, Wendy, camping; giving back and supporting Camp Get-A-Way always brings back great memories. She loves seeing the opportunities Camp Get-A-Way creates for kids with mental health issues (and their families) to enjoy camping without any stigma or judgement from others.

Sherika Madison-Hall

Fundraising

Sherika, from Long Island, New York, lives an active life with her wife, five sons, and one daughter. It probably won’t be long before you learn that she’s a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan, but something most people don’t know about her is that she played basketball in Europe for two weeks in 1997.

Sherika is on the fundraising committee and also interviews potential staff and board members. One of her favorite parts of camp is the annual dance which includes a photo booth where kids and their families can dance, be goofy, and relax. Giving families time away from their everyday lives is what it’s all about for Sherika—and seeing those smiling faces lets her know that it’s all worth it.

Adrienne Foster

Adrienne Foster

Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Adrienne now lives in Rushville, NY, on her small hobby farm, complete with horses, chickens, dogs, cats, and birds! While she and her husband spend a lot of time growing their garden, she also has a knack for online word games—it turns out they can get pretty competitive.

Because her role with Camp Get-A-Way is less specific, Adrienne kind of does it all! On a day-to-day basis, she interacts with other board members and supports Ken. For Adrienne, camp is all about the sense of empowerment that campers and their parents can find at Camp Get-A-Way. There’s something to be said for the hands-on skills that people can learn when they’re pushed just to try. There’s nothing like watching people who were once total strangers becoming friends during camp!
